Paul Lewis in Recital

Paul Lewis in Recital

Cosmic and comic piano music by Schubert and Beethoven.

Paul Lewis has made a rich contribution to our enjoyment of music from the heart of the piano repertoire. His readings of Schubert’s sonatas highlight their luminous lyricism and pathos. Schubert, he says, ‘writes something that comes from another planet… it is something beyond.’ Lewis communes intensely with the composer, bringing to the surface the delicate emotion of these subtly powerful works.

Beethoven’s endlessly inventive variations on Diabelli’s artless waltz transcend their raw material. The Diabelli Variations are practically postmodern in their wayward digressions: here is a reference to Mozart’s Figaro, here is sublimity and here parody. Paul Lewis’s Diabelli Variations is ‘elegant, sly and richly characterised’ (NY Times). Lewis is alive to the potential of this late and mysteriously comic masterpiece.
